About This Quote

I write, because not breathing is not an option. I write because I cannot breathe. Many people wish they could write. I am one of them.

They dream of a book, a memoir, a novel, a blog post, a screenplay or a painting. They imagine going on book tours and signing books in front of thousands of people. They imagine their work being published and read by millions around the world.

Most people who want to write do not realize that they must first survive an illness that is worse than the one they are facing. Life is already hard enough without having to face chronic pain that prevents them from doing anything productive or enjoyable it their life. People with illnesses such as cancer and HIV/AIDS have to find a way to return to living while coping with the illness and its side effects.

It is difficult to be creative when you have no energy or motivation. Some of my friends have been so sick that they were unable to get out of bed for months at a time. Even when they did get out of bed, they had little ability to get anything done at home or even in their own bodies for that matter.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer or have AIDS, you have to find ways to get the most from your life while coping with your illness and living in pain and discomfort every day (or every week for some). If you can find ways to make yourself happy through writing and share your story with others in some way, the words will provide the strength you need to keep going when all hope seems lost.
